There are a number of ways to create these shutters, but for the most part, they are simply two or three boards nailed together. Board and batten shutters DIY, measure the length of your exterior windows. Add 3 inches for the top and bottom replacement. If you want more or less, adjust that amount. Cut four pieces of 1-by-8-inch lumber the length you specified in the previous step. Sand the ends and any flaws with a hand grinder. Add two pieces of wood side by side on a flat surface. Line up the tops and bottoms of the two parts. Allow 1/2 inch distance between the two parts.
Board and batten shutters DIY, measure the width of the two boards are. Cut two pieces of 1-by-4-inch lumber to that length. Sand the ends and rough spots on these boards. Place the first part of the 1-by-4-inch lumber 10 inches from the top of the shutter. Place the second piece 10 inches from the bottom. The ends of the 1-by-4-inch lumber should be even with the outer edges of the wooden shutter. Mount the second shutter in the same way. Let the glue dry on this shutter too.
